Ursula Medley is a Canadian artist best known for her en plein air landscape paintings that have taken her around the world. “A passion for travel and an on-going wanderlust take me to the back roads of British Columbia, ancient villages in Europe, and magical corners of Mexico where hidden landscapes inspire fresh work.” She received arts education in Painting, Printmaking, and Fabric Arts & Design from the University of British Columbia and works within the tradition of the Group of Seven (a Canadian landscape art movement). She has been described as a Tom Thomson for our times — capturing the rhythm, beauty, and colour of the Canadian landscape. Employing techniques she’s developed for spontaneous on-location painting, her impressionist land and garden scapes come out of direct doing and seeing, with a consciousness of nature’s rhythms.
Her unique approach to painting blends old world techniques with modern day inspirations, often depicting the manual work associated with life on the Canadian West Coast.
For over 45 years, Ursula has taught painting classes and has led en plain air workshops in Canada, Italy and Mexico. Imbued with a playful imagination, Ursula has been known to cross over into other mediums, creating everything from papier-mâché sculptures to parade mascots and public murals. Ursula currently lives and works in Powell River, Canada. When she’s not in her studio, you can find her gardening, baking, or walking the beach with her dog, Coco.
